Skype bukan SIP

Hanya karena Skype memberikan tarif murah, maka menggunakan SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)... demikian lah pandangan yang terbentuk di publik, sebagaimana ada dalam artikel Kompas pada tanggal 6 September 2006.

Sesungguhnya, sama sekali bukan SIP. Skype menggunakan protokol sendiri (proprietary) yang berbasis Peer-to-Peer (P2P). Dengan protokol ini, maka tidak ada sistim yang tersentralisasi, sebagaimana dijelaskan dalam The Power of Us (BusinessWeek, Juni 20, 2005):

How can a tiny European upstart like Skype Technologies S.A. do a number on a trillion-dollar industry? By dialing up a vast, hidden resource: its own users. Skype, the newest creation from the same folks whose popular file-sharing software Kazaa freaked out record execs, also lets people share their resources -- legally. When users fire up Skype, they automatically allow their spare computing power and Net connections to be borrowed by the Skype network, which uses that collective resource to route others' calls. The result: a self-sustaining phone system that requires no central capital investment -- just the willingness of its users to share.

Itulah hebatnya Skype. Sama seperti Kazaa, protokol Skype membentuk supernode-supernode dari setiap host komputer yang terhubung ke jaringan Skype. Supernode ini adalah jaringan yang 'mengkoordinir' host-host yang tergabung dalam jaringan Skype. Karena protokol Skype bersifat proprietary, maka saya sendiri tidak bisa menjelaskan lebih lanjut tentang apa dan bagaimana supernode ini.

Saya iseng-iseng pakai aplikasi TCPView untuk melihat koneksi di aplikasi Skype saya dan seperti inilah hasilnya:

Saya tidak tahu apakah IP Address ini supernode atau sekedar host (tampaknya sih, IP Address host). Kalau di Skype versi-versi awal, IP Address supernode tersimpan di dalam registry Skype. Namun dalam versi yang saat ini, sudah tidak disimpan dalam registry lagi. But anyway, Skype sudah membuktikan bahwa kekuatan dari unstructured publik sama kuatnya dengan sistim sentralisasi yang dibangun operator.
